I AM meditation

@ Lisa Cairns

"I was reading a quote from Ramana Maharshi the other day, and it was something along the lines of him saying that the words mess up the silence or distract from the silence, and I think ultimately this is really true. I think often words are used as a way for comfort for people, to identify themselves as someone, to check in that they're safe with other people, but you see silence is such a gift and ultimately silence is your heart, it's not what you do or don't do.

So a very powerful meditation that Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj recommended was to match up the I and the am with the breath.

So when you breathe in you say inside your head I, when you breathe out you say am. I think Ramana Maharshi he would often say soham, so soham in Sanskrit I believe is I am that, so you can also do it in Sanskrit or in English or your own native language, whatever feels good for you.

And Ramana Maharishi would say that this is one of the most powerful ways to settle the mind, so it's like almost using a mantra to the breath but the mantra is I am the essence.

What Ramana Maharishi also spoke about was staying with the original I am, so the question who am I is always about coming back to the I am, dropping into the I am, the first feeling of being or the first as he would say identification, not I am good or I am bad or I am right or I am wrong, but I am before all of that.

And what's good about doing the I am practise and sitting in meditation position which is a cool sitting on a cushion with your legs crossed, is that by following the breath and chanting in I and then letting out am, you're kind of putting the attention into the whole body. It's kind of as you breathe in it goes down into your torso, into your sacral chakra, your root chakra and it's kind of lighting up the whole body because your legs are on level with your sacral chakra.

So often what happens when you do this practise is is the whole body becomes alive, is brought into attention.

So in with the I and out with the am and as you begin to feel the aliveness of your body because everything begins to light up, there's this aliveness happening, this being happening, you can then begin to question is that being really inside a body? Right now if you don't think about it, it is really present to it, is that being inside a body? Is that being in relationship to a world? Or is that only being?

So just keep coming back to I with the in-breath and am with the out-breath. If you drift off into thought just keep coming back to it.

The absolute celebration every time you find it again.

So just keep coming back high with the in-breath and with the out-breath.

So just one more investigation.

Is the being inside or outside a body? Does it have a limitation on it? Does it have a back, a front, a top, a bottom? Is it from a country? Is it a colour? A size? Right here, right now, what is your essence? Is it hearing the voice or is this simply voice appearing in it as it?

Okay, I'm going to open your eyes."
